Rick has kindly taken some time out to answer some questions about album 2 and what is happening in the world of Delphic.......

You've been away from the lime light pretty much since The Warehouse Project last year give or take some one off gigs, what have you been upto?

well, 2 years solid touring took its toll so we decided to take a few weeks off immediately after that final warehouse project gig, before reconvening in a studio barn somewhere outside of manchester to set about tackling the task of writing album no. 2. we have been working hard building up the new album since the start of this year and now finally feel like we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. we tend to spend quite a lot of time experimenting with things making sure we get them just right. it has been somewhat of an arduous process at times, but the results will be worth it.

You've recently been posting some instrumentals on your website, is this the sign of things to come?

some of them maybe. we are always working on new arrangements and feels and sometimes they never see the light of day, but sometimes they make it onto our blog videos or even the album.

Have you got a name for album 2 yet?

yes.

For Acolyte you had Ewan Pearson producing, any ideas on who you want to produce album 2?

there are lots of people we admire at the moment and have been speaking to a few different people regarding production. it's always a tricky one as we end of producing the majority of it ourselves, so letting someone into our inner sanctum can make us all feel uneasy. however, i think there always comes a point when you lose objectivity and you need an outside opinion. we could end working with a few different people for this new album as different people have different skills. it's not exactly straightforward.

What can we expect from album 2, a change of direction?

i think so. again, it's hard to be objective about what we are doing as we have been lost in this world for months now, but we do get bored very easily and constantly challenge ourselves sonically. when we started writing the first album, we only had one synthesizer and some basic knowledge of computer programming. naturally over the last few years we have become better programmers and arrangers and most importantly better songwriters. i think the first album in some way was defined by our limitations, in a good way... but i think this one will sound quite different due to the new limitations set upon us - not necessarily lack of skill, but more psychological or trying to balance between different musical worlds.

When do you expect album 2 to be completed?

we are pretty close, but it's hard to say. the writing is almost done and quite a bit of the recording. but then we have to take it out of our world and into a new one, where we aren't always in control.

Have you any plans to showcase the new material prior to the album/single being released?

absolutely. we are probably going to pop up unannounced over the next few months to try out some of the new songs. we all miss touring so hopefully we will be back out for a full tour in the not too distant future.

Whats been on the delphic playlist of late? I listened to a playlist you did a few months ago and am now hooked on that Janelle Monae track ''Faster''.

hudson mohawke is pretty much constantly being played in our flat. we really love his production. and there are other people in his field who we also really like at the moment like rustie or lunice. but it's not all dance music and production, we spend most of our time listening to great songwriters like kate bush or gram parsons. the music we are listening to at the moment is different to the music we were listening to when we wrote acolyte, so naturally the sound of the album has taken a different turn.

Like we said in your last interview your support acts have been of the highest order, have you seen any bands lately that you would love to have in support?

a friend introduced us to a band called no ceremony recently. we have only heard the one track, but it is very curious. hopefully there will be more revealed soon.

There seems to be a sense of nostalgia associated with this year’s Warehouse Project line-up, with acts coming together to celebrate Manchester’s past and present. Last week Manchester’s brit rock legends Doves played a blinding set at this very venue and what could possibly be their swansong before they go their separate ways. And, in a few weeks King Monkey himself, Ian Brown of Stone Roses fame, will be taking to the stage.

After revisiting a glorious past, it’s time to switch towards the bright future of Manchester’s music. Therefore, it’s only fitting that an electro-dance act like Delphic, who embody what the future holds, are given a night to themselves.

Before they play, there are clutch of fresh new bands to check out. First up were Jamaica, who mislead the Warehouse crowd into thinking they are of American origins by arriving on stage with 10cc’s Dreadlock Holiday. However, they quickly dive into their indie-rock sounds and announce they are from France. Like a beefier Phoenix, the band gets the crowd going with their indie rock sing alongs and in between chatter. Unfortunately, their sound does wear thin mid set as their lyrics become lost in translation and you just wish they would mix it up a bit.

Fenech Soler another French sounding band, except not a band from France, but from Northampton. How confusing. Their electro pop-sound has already made its mark with the radio hogging ‘Lies’, whose persistent melody is one of those that you just can’t shake. It seems that they have a few more where that one came from, with another big tune ‘Stop and Stare’ and electro stormer ‘Battlefield’. They have a boundless energy on-stage, which transmits to the crowd, and their electro-pop mayhem works well in this venue. The only irritating thing is how many times they mention the name in the band. We get who you are already!

Anticipation is building for Oldham’s The Whip’s entrance. It’s been a while since they played live their indie rave sounds and true to their name they whip the crowd into a frenzy, with their indie dance stormers; including the monster like ‘Divebomb’ and ‘Fire’. When you have a room full of people singing ‘I Wanna Be Trashed’ it can’t be a bad thing. The only issue is that their music is more structured around electronic dance workouts rather than actual songs; not that the warehouse massive mind.

Finally, at what is about 1:30 – or is it 12:30?- Delphic enter the stage with a booming synth backdrop, and treat the crowd to a frenetic set of songs from their album ‘Acolyte’. Each track feeds into the next one as the band play at breakneck speed, without pausing for breath other than for introductions. The electro anthems ‘Doubt’ and ‘Halcyon’ disarm the crowd and cause mass sing-alongs. The mellow ‘This Momentary’ sounds shoegazey and epic, while the trance like ‘Red Light’ is utterly hypnotic. The glistening synths of’ Counterpoint’, with refrain ‘nothing’s wrong today’, packs an emotional punch and renders the crowd powerless to resist.

One thing is for sure, this band know how to craft the perfect pop tune; with emotive lyrics and trail-blazing choruses. Although they have one foot in the past, their combination of electronic textures and full on guitars, give the band that freshness and ensures their blinding set lingers in the memory.

Tonight was a blistering homecoming set from Delphic and another notch on their rise to stardom. The hacienda may be long gone but on tonight’s evidence its spirit lives on.

You've been around the world but still call Manchester home. Can you put your finger on what it is that you love about the city?

Manchester is where most of us grew up. We spent years as kids traipsing round the toilet venues watching bands and playing ourselves. There is a very strong music network in Manchester and there is a lot of help for new bands. I also like the way you can walk across it in half an hour, and I like the way it looks now.

What's your favourite Manchester...

Current favourite Manchester band?

It's difficult not say Everything Everything. Their album has been on our iPods pretty much constantly since its release. But we also have a huge soft spot for Dutch Uncles. They showed us some of their new tracks the other day and we became quite excited. In fact, Duncan (singer) came over to my house the other day and we spent the whole day going through ideas and listening to music. It's interesting to spend time with other musicians outside of your own group.

Do you have anything special planned for your WHP show?

If we did, we wouldn't ruin the surprise.

Aside from your night, are there any other WHP events that you're particularly looking forward to?

I'm quite disappointed we can't attend the one the night before (we are playing the London Warehouse that night), with Magnetic Man, Flying Lotus, Joy Orbison, Martyn and Joker amongst others. I would also like to see Kelis...

One thing that any visitor to Manchester should do.

Somehow, the Nation’s Capital was gifted with Delphic’s only headlining gig during their current autumn campaign of North America supporting the Temper Trap. Being the headliner allows the band to spread its figurative wings unlike any of their other appearances, where they are an opener for a more conventional rock / pop outfit. And DC9’s weekly Liberation Dance Party proves to be just the place for Delphic to unleash its perfected blend of electronica and guitar rock on a mostly unsuspecting Washington audience.

Delphic, including bass-playing frontman James Cook, are a reticent bunch, content on letting the music speak for itself as they start the proceedings with ‘Clarion Call’, the opening track of their self-titled debut album. It’s the only brief moment of the night that the trio from Manchester can be said to be taking it easy: the rest of the set is a swirling maelstrom of sound, the DC9 stage a hive of activity as synths, percussion and guitars are played with precision. ‘Doubt’ immediately follows ‘Clarion Call’, turning up the energy several notches, and this energy level just keeps rising towards the boiling point as the set continues.

The band proffers ‘Red Lights’, with its emotional lyrics counterintuitively sung in an unemotional tone (but it works) and a wicked, heavily synth-laden extended outro, converting the club into a rave as Cook encourages punters to dance. This scene recalls Delphic’s early days, before they were signed and were making a name for themselves locally by staging secret, illicit raves in abandoned Manchester warehouses.

The only thing missing is an appropriately ravey light show. But the crowd doesn’t appear to mind; they are buoyed by all the action onstage, with girls and guys pogo-ing about like loons to the beats, arms in the air. DC crowds are sometimes referred to as ‘stiff’ when it comes to dancing, but you wouldn’t have known it looking at everyone letting loose to Delphic.

‘This Momentary’, ‘Halcyon’ and ‘Counterpoint’ are played in rapid succession, building on the excitement of the song preceding it. The crowning moment is when Delphic play the title track ‘Acolyte’. As is the tradition with classic dance songs, this one is rather long, clocking in at over nine minutes. But it’s nine minutes of breathtaking sonic beauty. Cook and keyboardist Rick Boardman’s vocals are ethereal, rising above the majestic guitars, beats, and synths. You realise that standing there in that cramped 200-capacity venue, you are witnessing something truly special.

By the end, the sweaty audience are eager for the band to play more songs and demand it they do. Without providing an encore, Delphic have managed to leave the Washington crowd wanting more and have ensured that the next time they return to the Nation’s Capital they will be welcomed with open arms and many more fans.

Which bands/artists are you currently listening to?

We have had Everything Everything's album on repeat since its release and we are very fond of it. Other than that we have been listening to everything from Villagers to Philip Glass.

Would you ever consider collaborating with any other artists, if so who?

Of course, i think collaborating with other people, whether they are producers or performers is interesting - anything that can expand your musical horizons and open your mind to new things. We have learnt a lot from the producers we worked with on the first album (Ewan Pearson, Steve Dub, Tom Rowlands, Paul Hartnoll) and even if we didn't always use the recordings, we took a lot of valuable stuff away with us. The people we all really admire (Bowie, Bjork etc) have always worked with different people in an attempt to stay fresh and exciting.

Are there any plans for more UK shows before the year is out?

The more shows we do, the less time we have to build up our new material. We are playing the London and Manchester WHP nights and a Gatecrasher night in Nottingham and that is it. We head off to a farm somewhere in Cheshire in November to really get stuck into what will become our second record so we have chosen to keep gigs to a minimum.

Now I’ve been to see you on each of your UK tours this year and I have to say that the support acts have been quality…..are you in charge of picking them?

Yes we are. We try to listen to as much new music as possible so we are always suggesting acts to our booking agents in the hope they will play with us. Luckily, they appreciate the importance of a quality support band. We were really lucky to play with Everything Everything. That has to be a highlight for us.

It seems that you've been on tour for the majority of each month so far this year, is it hard being away from home for such a length of time?

It not necessarily hard being away from home. It doesn't even feel like we have one at the moment. But it is hard being away from our studio... It is, however, inspiring seeing all the new places we have seen around the world (Berlin, Tokyo, New York etc) and we like the idea of moving out of Manchester to keep us inspired.

What in your eyes are the best & worst venue/crowd you’ve played to?

Some of the festivals this summer have been great. Glastonbury and Reading to name but a few. It's scary playing festivals because you never know quite how many people are going to turn up until the last minute before you go onstage, but luckily we have been fortunate enough to have a lot of full tents this summer. I wouldn't like to talk about the bad ones on the off chance someone from one of those gigs is reading this...

The boys recently took part in an interview for delphicfans heres the first part. I hope you enjoy it?

So your away writing at the moment, how is that going.....any new material for a second album?

We have been accumulating lots and lots of ideas during our time on the road these last 18 months and passing around usb sticks to each other containing folders and folders of melodies, chord sequences and synth sounds.
Whenever we get back from tour we get into the studio at Delphic HQ and start to add more elements to these ideas. Sometimes we head off to a little cottage in Hereford so we can completely escape from everything and really immerse ourselves in the new sound. The sound is quite different from Acolyte but that is really exciting us at the moment.
We write songs in quite an odd way. We tend to build up a number of ideas together rather than just writing one song and then moving onto the next.
We also like to challenge ourselves quite a lot to produce more interesting results. So, on the first album, we wrote 10 songs with the intention of those songs being our complete debut album. However, with this second record, we have about 15 or 16 embryonic songs/ideas (which will hopefully grow even more) that we will choose from once they are all completed.

You've just announced a home town gig at the Warehouse Project called Delphic presents Acolyte, does this mean that you will be playing the album in full?

Most probably, but not necessarily in the order that they are presented on the album. We can have a lot of fun live with all the mixes between songs, although this obviously presents a difficulty when slotting in new songs as they need to be remixed into the set...

If not is this something that you plan to do in the future?

Probably not. We are really looking forward to getting the new songs ready and then approaching the live set from a different angle with the new songs. I also like the idea of slightly adapting some of the old songs to fit in with the style of the new sound.

Will there be any surprise additions to the set such as b sides/new material and covers?

I really want to play Alterstate live for this show but I'm not sure we will have time to rehearse it. As i mentioned with the new songs, it is not easy to slot in new ideas due to the way we perform live in this DJ style. And with the new songs taking on a different sonic shape, it wouldn't feel right just to lump something in with the Acolyte songs. Ideally we would like to keep them separate entities.

Rick Interview At Roskilde

One of the highlights of Roskilde for me this year was seeing Manchester electropop dance band Delphic perform at Pavilion, the smallest stage of them all at the festival. A couple hours before their performance on Friday 2nd of July I met up with Rick Boardman (keyboards, synths, backing vocals) backstage to have a chat. The band had arrived literally minutes prior, having driven several hours from an appearance the previous night at the Peace and Love Festival in Borlänge, Sweden. In part one of this candid interview, I learn about the little town they call home, the Manchester music scene and why you haven’t a chance with them if you try flirting with them in a club, and I even briefly act as therapist.

Oh, and if you wondering what is up with the seated pose and banana, Rick insisted on eating a banana while I photographed him to, in his words, ‘promote healthy living’. What a breath of fresh air in the rock ‘n’ roll business!

So…tell me a little about yourself, what instruments you play, and how you contribute to Delphic.
Well, I play…I mean, performance-wise, I play keys and do a bit of singing. And I guess, I dunno, we’re a quite a synth-led, electronic kind of band, so we always have of lot of synthesisers lying about. I guess the main thing about all of us is that we’re kind of all composers, all kind of studio buffs, so that’s the kind of real Delphic. What we do onstage is a means of interpreting that, I guess. In the studio, we’re all writers…so yeah.

Who or what inspired you to start playing music and want to be in a band?
I guess…I dunno, I must have been around 6 or 7, 7 when I started playing piano. And I always played piano. And then about the age of 16, I think my dad gave me a Minidisc recorder. See, that’s what we’re talking about, the time period, it was really big for about 2 years, it was totally going to take off – and yeah, it was ‘Kid A’ by Radiohead, and he gave me a couple of their songs. And I’d never gotten into Radiohead before, and um, we had a few synthesisers lying about. My dad had a few synthesisers, he used to build synthesisers. So I messed about with them, trying to rip off what they’d done with their Warp Records-influenced stuff, and from listening to that I got into loads of experimental kind of prog music and stuff and Godspeed You Black Emperor! stuff and all these big epic post-rock bands and stuff like that. And then from then it just kind of progressed, and I just thought, you know what, if I can somehow get away with this, this is a much more fun job than going to become a lawyer like my dad or anything like that! So I kind of stuck with it.

Same with the other guys really. I’ve always played with Matt (Cocksedge) the guitarist since we were about 16. He’s been in my first band and every band we’ve ever been since and there’ve been five and six of them until this one, as kids. James (Cook, lead singer / bassist) lived down south and moved to Manchester 9 years ago, so I’ve only ever been in this band with James, but he was going for similar thing when he was younger, being in bands with people he knew around the same age I guess.

Yeah, I read in a BBC interview that before Delphic you were in all these other bands. How do those bands compare to what Delphic is now in terms of sound?
I think the main thing is…we talk about them in not the fondest of ways, which we shouldn’t really do, because they’re an important part of our musical life, an important learning curve. It’s an important thing to go through. I think even most artists, even when you look at the greats – my favourite artists, you know, David Bowie, etc., they’ve all gone through this kind of period early on where they just kind of don’t know what they’re doing…and now they’re compared to the ‘Ziggy’ (Stardust) album or whatever. There are all these odd stuffs going on. I think the main problem for us, and what was important to go through to get to this, was just we never felt we were in control of our own music. We were always chasing someone else’s style or scene. So it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what style it was. We went through a number of different things. We were, I guess, copying other people with the overall goal, an end goal to try and get somewhere, get a record deal or whatever. Just copying. So okay, we heard Bloc Party‘s first album, let’s be like Bloc Party. We heard ‘Kid A’, let’s be like ‘Kid A’. Or we heard Godspeed You Black Emperor!, let’s be like Godspeed You Black Emperor!

And it was only when we were old enough and mature enough, we’d learned all what we felt we needed to know about being in a band, we quit and filtered out the shit members of the band because there were a load of us in it and some of them didn’t work. Me and Matt carried on and brought in James, and then kind of said, you know what? Let’s do what we want to do, what aren’t we hearing on the radio at the moment, what music do we want to make that we aren’t hearing elsewhere? Let’s just do that! And if everyone likes it or no-one else likes it, it doesn’t matter. And from that point on we felt more in control, and things started happening for us.

Do you have a permanent touring drummer now or is he part of your band, how does this work?
Yeah, he’s kind of an enigma really. It is a mysterious situation. He’s called Dan (Hadley) and he played on the album (‘Acolyte’), on pretty much all the tracks. He started playing with us before we gigged and helped build up the songs live. He doesn’t write with us at the moment, although when it comes to the second album I think we will kind of bring him in more. He joined a year later than us, and we’ve known each other for such a long time, and it’s not easy to bring someone into your group. But we’ve been with him for about a year and half now and we could never do without him. There’s no other drummer I’d feel comfortable with.

Now you guys were originally based in Manchester, is that correct, or outside Manchester…?
Just outside Manchester. Twenty-minute train journey from Manchester. Basically, me and James met at university and James…when he finished university, he was going to go back down south to see his parents, and I said no no no, come on, let’s…we were actually in this other band at the time and he was doing other things. I always thought James had kind of something about him, and I really liked his voice. And it was like, come on, you stay up in Manchester, and I’m sure at some point, we will end up doing something together. He ended up living with me and my family, I was still living with my mum and dad at the time and he moved in. Permanent lodger with my mum and dad, my sister and me. Lived there for a bit. Then we split up the old band and restarted. We wrote a lot of Delphic tunes in that house, my mum and dad’s. We also went away to a cottage in the Lake District for a month or something, and that was kind of throwing ourselves into an uncomfortable situation, spending a lot of time together, going for walks. Really inspiring, really important point, we wrote half the album up there really, conceptualised a lot of it.

But this place called Marple, we always say we’re a Manchester band, we now all live in Manchester, we all still share a flat in Manchester. But Marple’s a little town with some very proud people there. So when they got wind that Delphic was from Marple and doing well, they advertised it everywhere and they changed the Wikipedia page, ‘Delphic come from Marple!’

Is it like a village outside Manchester?
Yeah, it’s a small town, very small. But it looks like a cute little village. But in fact Miss Marple um…I think em…was it Agatha Christie that did Miss Marple?

Yes.
She was on a train from like Sheffield to Manchester and she went through Marple and that’s where she got the inspiration for the character.

Well you know, Stevie Nicks got the inspiration for a Fleetwood Mac song from driving past a sign on the motorway for the town I was born in.
Oh really? The Marple one is a bit better of a story. [laughs] But Marple, it’s actually quite a nice little hub for bands. There’s a few bands out there at the moment. There’s a band called Egyptian Hip Hop, who are originally from Marple. Another one called Dutch Uncles that we are very friendly with…

I didn’t know they were from there. I think the problem is that the media just lumps everyone together and says they’re from Manchester.
Yeah. Don’t really know why Marple gets so many great bands. There was a band called the Maple State, they were like an English version of Minus the Bear. But they’re no longer together, unfortunately. Tony Wilson used to live there, the Smiths wrote ‘This Charming Man’ there. So it’s got quite a heritage for a little place, yeah.

Well, I’m sure in general the Manchester area is very nurturing towards bands.
It is, yeah.

There’s such a big scene. It’s got to be the largest music hub in the North I suppose, right?
No, it is. And the network is really, really strong. I knew that as soon as me and Matt were 16 and started going out and said, okay, we’re going to gig. You know, there were venues to play, there were places we could go. You know, from the age of 16, we didn’t know what we were doing, we were writing a bunch of rubbish experimental prog trosh music or whatever. But it was nice, we could go and make friends with promoters and people were helping us. Within a year, we did this one song with flutes that was quite good, and Guy Garvey from Elbow rang us up and said ‘I really like it. I want to put you on this night, we want to put you on this compilation’, and everyone was trying to help here. Really strong network of people. We quickly made a lot of contacts. Even though none of that early stuff necessarily worked, when it came to Delphic, we had this huge network of people we could depend on, and that really helped us not having to go through the kind of toiling gig circuit, playing every night looking for Mister A&R Bigshot. We knew the people to speak to and we knew the places to play, so we could bypass in a way and I guess get where we wanted to quicker.

Yeah, Manchester has a lot of great venues. I was there a couple years ago…
Yeah, were you?

Yeah, I saw Morrissey on tour there.
Where did you go?

He played three nights in a row – the Manchester Apollo the first night, then the Opera House, then Bridgewater Hall, this small, classical place.
You went to all of them?

Yeah…
Wow. Big Morrissey fan then, yeah?

Yes. [laughs] I’ve been lucky to have been to England 3 out of the last 4 years. For bands.
For bands? Fantastic. Manchester’s great, I mean obviously the Smiths…I’ve actually been to Johnny Marr’s house actually, to do a recording once. Pretty unbelievable because he lives in a very nice house. But he’s another one of them people you know…he’s off with the Cribs now but he’s very supportive of young bands and helping them…Doves, Elbow, they all are really. Except for Oasis who fucked down to London and didn’t care about the rest of us! Just left this big splurging mess on the city and then fucked off. [laughs]

‘Acolyte’, your debut album, was released in January in the UK. When was it released in Europe? Around the same time?
Yeah, some European countries, it was released a couple weeks after. Some, about a month after. In America it’s only just come out (29 June).

Congratulations on its success.
Yeah yeah, thank you.

Are you starting to get recognised on the street or when you’re out in the shops?
We’ve had the odd thing in Manchester, but it’s usually around gig things. I mean, to be honest, we’ve tried to…we’re quite shy, kind of retiring people in one way. At least on this campaign. And when we started out, we were very conscious of putting art and image above ourselves, because we didn’t feel we presented, I guess the three of us…I dunno, we’re just shy, we’re media camera shy, so as you would have noticed in our videos, we made a conscious decision to not be in any of the videos. And all our press pictures and photos that we’ve done they’re slightly distorted or manipulated, we wanted ourselves to look slightly weird so if we walked down the street…I mean, no one would know we were Delphic really…but obviously in Manchester we get the odd kind of thing.

The good thing about Manchester is that it’s not like going down to London. Where it’s like wow, I went to this party with so and so and da da da da da. And I saw this guy…[adopts high-pitched voice] and oh my god, you’re from this? [goes back to normal voice] And in Manchester, it’s like [folds his arms over]…whatever. We just don’t care. Everyone’s so chilled out when they’ve grown up in Manchester. Liam Gallagher could walk across (the street) and everyone would be like, whatever. It’s just cool innit, in Manchester. [laughs] We’re lucky, we can be in a little bubble up there and go around and not worry about being recognised.

I was going to say, since you’ve been on Jools Holland, everyone’s seen you on network telly, you know.
Yeah, that obviously was a huge thing. And um…there’s been a funny thing. James was riding his bike home the other day and he thought he was getting threatened, because someone was shouting ‘you’re fucking Delphic!’ He had his hood up and he’s riding his bike and thinking how the hell does he know who I am? And this guy was shouting ‘you’re fucking Delphic!’ He didn’t know if it was positive or negative.

Usually, to be honest, and we do this a lot of the time, what will happen, we’ll be out at a club, and we’re very, very self-obsessed and involved with each other in quite a bizarre way. We’re very close, and we’ll spend the whole time arguing. We’ll have these discussions, and we’re like brothers you know. And we’ll go to a club, and be there with our crew and there’ll be these two pretty young girls looking over, trying to make eye contact. And during this time me and James will be having a blazing, you know, obnoxious row and totally miss the fact that anyone is trying to flirt with us. And then our crew will be like, ‘what are you doing, you idiots? Those beautiful girls are trying to give you the eyes.’ And we’d say ‘What? Really?’ We didn’t notice, we were so wrapped up in like, I think we should go to this chord for the next album and da da da da da… [laughs]

Now you mentioned you share a flat in Manchester.
Yeah.

So like, uh, do you get into rows over who does the washing up and that sort of thing, or…?
Yeah, we do, actually. To be honest what’s actually happened recently was, it’s been very difficult. We all live in this flat together. And it immediately became apparent that it was a bit too intense. I mean, like, it’s a big enough flat, it’s got two floors. For three people, it’s slightly too small. It’s big enough for two. It’s slightly claustrophobic, and so it started to impact the relationship between the three of us. As you can imagine with three people, often it’s like two will go off, and one is left on their own. And usually it’s me and James will go off, or me and Matt will go off. So I’m always all right, because I’ve always got someone. [both laugh] But it can often leave out the other person. And James started feeling really, really claustrophobic and felt he couldn’t write in the flat, and I kind of…I dunno, somehow I wrangled myself a space on the top floor so I had a little writing deck, and James was stuck downstairs and wasn’t happy with the writing situation. So he moved out into a flat in the Northern Quarter, about a half-hour’s walk away, for about 6 months.

And me and Matt were left there. And then me and Matt started getting really close. And me and James were kind of…I mean, this is deep, deep psychological stuff! This is like a counseling session! [both laugh] But me and James had always been very, very close but then our relationship started to suffer being apart from each other. We like to kind of, it’s 3 o’clock in the morning, ‘I got an idea, can we work on this? Get up from your bed!’ And we’ll work on an idea. And we couldn’t do that living there, so James then moved back, back into the flat, a couple months ago. But now Matt has moved out, but Matt is now living in the flat across the corridor, so on the top floor on our block of flats, there are two apartments, me and James are in one and Matt’s in the other. So that’s kind of working out for us now. So um, yeah, there’s less arguments now that it’s just two of us in there, me and James are getting on really well. And the writing’s really helped by the situation, and Matt’s kind of just…

…so he’s close enough in case there’s suddenly a burst of inspiration!
Exactly. So we can just pop across. You know, we like the idea of…we’ve been like this for a month now and we’ll swap around and maybe I’ll live on my own for a while!

Actually, that’s the perfect situation because in case someone’s got a mate who’s coming into town, you have a place for them to crash.
Yes, exactly.

Now as we talked before, ‘Acolyte’ was released in America this past Tuesday (29 June).
Yeah.

And you were just in my country playing a couple shows. So what was that like? What was the reception like over there? Unfortunately, none of the dates were close enough to me so I couldn’t go.
It looks like we’re going back there, but I can’t say too much, because I don’t think it’s been announced. But come October, we will be returning to America, in support of another band that will have heard of, but I’m not allowed to say who. Like a full tour of America, from east to west.

I have a feeling I know who it is. And I’m going to miss it. [frowns]
Who do you reckon you think it is?

Two Door Cinema Club.
No, it’s not Two Door Cinema Club. Although we have played with them before and we do like them.

Yeah, our editor at There Goes the Fear, Phil…
Oh yeah, I remember you guys!

Yeah, we’ve interviewed you guys over email before. Yeah, he saw you guys and Two Door at Southampton Joiners in October, and I guess you guys were on a Kitsune bill?
Yeah yeah.

And I was like nooooooo, I want to go to that! [Rick laughs]

I’ve seen Two Door Cinema Club twice now, supporting Phoenix in Washington DC, and then they didn’t come back for a headlining date so I went up to Philadelphia to see them.

Oh right. So we’re going to Philadelphia, I can tell you that. All I know is that Philadelphia is the first date. I can’t remember the others.

I hope you guys come to DC, because a lot of bands will choose between Philly and DC. But you said October…

Yeah, but they’re not all confirmed. But end of September through the end of October. Quite big for us. Six weeks.

Is it an English band?
No.

Oh no! Then I might not like the headliner if they’re American…
It’s not an American band!

Oh…hmmm…that narrows it down somewhat.
Yeah…

They’re not French, are they? Since you’re with Kitsune?
Nope, not French. [laughs, then nibbles on sandwich] I’ll let you keep guessing.

I’ll have to give this more thought, because really…are they from Europe?
I’m not allowed to say it anyway, so even if you did say it, I couldn’t confirm. [laughs]

When do you think we’ll know?
Um, I think it’s going to be announced pretty soon, I think in the next couple of weeks, but I will get in trouble if I say anything. [laughs]

Ok, I’ll keep an eye on NME.com then. But you told me it isn’t Two Door Cinema Club.
No, it’s not Two Door Cinema Club.

Because they’re coming back to my town to play in my favourite venue the day I have to fly out to California for my day job.
Oh god. That’s awful. [frowns] But they’ll be back I’m sure.

Yeah.
[Note: it has now since been revealed that Delphic will be touring in North America this autumn as support for the Temper Trap. They'd never even crossed my mind!]

So is this (Roskilde Festival) the third Scandinavian festival you’ve played this week?
Yeah, we played Peace and Love in Sweden yesterday, and the day before…or was the day before that? Three days ago we were at Hove Festival in Norway. So yeah, the third one.

So how do those compare with the English festivals you’ve played at this year?
Well, if I’m being honest, we played Glastonbury I guess it was 1 week ago…

Which day did you play?
We played Friday and Saturday. Friday at the Dance Tent and Saturday in the John Peel Tent. And you know what? The dance tent was wicked, because we did a real ravey set for it and the vibe was amazing. But John Peel, it was close to 10,000 people. 8,000 to 9,000, big audience for us. It was brilliant. We’re not normally this kind of band, but after the dance tent, we all were like, ‘that was amazing!’ and we all went out and got pretty drunk that night and then immediately regretted it because it (the John Peel Tent) was probably our biggest show (ever). I was like warming up for 3 hours! But it was amazing. The crowd was unbelievable at Glastonbury, really, really good. I don’t really usually like touring that much but America was one of the only…I mean, festivals are quite good fun.

But I get bored very, very easily, so I want to be writing new stuff all the time. And we do it on the road, but I crave to be back in the studio. All the time, every day. It gets me down a bit. Yeah, it’s exciting to visit all these places but just like anything else, it becomes monotonous because it’s the same thing. It’s the same set, the same band, in a different country. Yeah, wow, I’m in Denmark, but this backstage area doesn’t look that different from where I was in Sweden or wherever, blah blah blah. What I really want to be doing is challenging myself with new songs every day, which I can’t always do. So that gets me down. But America…America was different, because of the huge heritage of bands it’s got, it’s just giving us this immense drive to go and do well over there. You know, to go and do something in America, and we’re desperate to go back there. It’s a really inspiring place, we were wandering around New York, like the Velvet Underground…

Where did you play in New York? Bowery Ballroom? Or Mercury Lounge?(two of the smaller but famous venues in New York City)
Oh god, I don’t remember the venue. You’ll have to check on the internet.

I’m thinking either Bowery Ballroom or Mercury Lounge. (Turns out they played Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn)Was it your own headlining gig?
Yeah.

Kind of like a record release party, even though the album came out 2 weeks later?
It was kinda…it wasn’t a record release party, but it was to coincide with the album being released. So it was New York, San Francisco – we did Popscene there, I can’t remember the venue but the night was Popscene…a really good one…

And then Los Angeles?
And then yeah, LA. Again, I can’t remember the name of the venue, I’m not very perceptive when it comes to things like this. The night was amazing. The reception was brilliant! LA was a bloody weird place. New York was really inspiring…

Every English band I’ve talked to has said the same thing about LA! California is like a separate country, because the vibe is completely different.
It’s very, very different. It’s a very fascinating place to visit. I couldn’t…I mean, I dunno, we didn’t see that much of it, you know, we were staying on the Sunset Strip. And we kind of wandered up into the Hills and stuff and we saw the more commercial side of LA, rather than the kind I dunno, it’s all about finding your little neighbourhoods, innit? And finding your little niches within that, and we didn’t find because we were tourists, you know. We didn’t see out maybe the side of LA that we would have liked but it’s not somewhere I’d want to live. But New York, everyone says this: you go to New York and everyone falls in love with it. I don’t think I’ve met anyone who’s been to New York and not fallen in love with it immediately. Just that everyone does. We did. We went there and listening to Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, wandering around, thinking, fucking hell, we need to move here, we need to write the second album out here! [laughs] Awesome, awesome place.

So yeah, is that in the game plan for the next 5, 10 years for Delphic, move out to New York?
Hope so. [nibbles on a sandwich] Manchester will always be our home. But we get bored dead easily. We like the idea of just moving around, getting inspired by different things. We’ve made a lot of headway with the second album…we’ve written a lot of stuff.

Oh yeah?
Yeah, it’s very embryonic, we’re trying to take a different approach. For the first record, we wrote ten songs, we knew we wanted a ten-track album. We wrote ten songs. We wrote songs to be a particular order. We wrote ‘Clarion Call’ to be number one (the first track), there was no way there was going to be another number one. That was number one. This one, to mix things up, when we were writing the first album, we said when we write the second album, we pretty much have to break up the band, forget how to write songs and build it up and start from scratch again. So we have a completely different approach. And to be honest, we’ve been through so much emotionally on this record between the three of us, all this moving out and falling out and everything that we have pretty much mentally broken up the band and completely reassessed the way we write songs, which is a good thing because it means we’ll approach it in a different way.

And for this one, we’ve got a name for it, but we can’t say that yet…we’ve got like…it’s a lot more songs. Instead of writing 10 songs for 10 songs, we want to write 50 songs and narrow it down, we’re taking a different approach, and we want to be a lot more experimental in the studio. And we want to leave…I dunno, I’ve been reading a lot about Bowie’s Berlin (album trilogy – ‘Low’, ‘Heroes’, and ‘Lodger’) era, and how a lot of the (Brian) Eno stuff was left up to chance. A lot of that kind of stuff I think…not all as much as that, as Eno provided lyrics and melodies on the spot on something that might end up being an instrumental 5 minutes before the vocals are recorded, not to quite that extent. But in a way we want to leave things up to chance in the studio and stuff. And we’re writing a lot of songs, so we don’t quite how things will turn out, but it’s very liberating and exciting.

How long did it take from the beginning of thinking about and writing the songs for ‘Acolyte’ to when it was released?
Well, I don’t know really…18 months maybe? Quite a long time. I think we pretty much wrote the album in about 8 months to a year. The first 3 months we were just talking about things and writing but not getting anywhere. And then we hit like a peak of writing and all the stuff we’d done in this cottage, we want back to it, and we were just in the zone. I think we’d just discovered Orbital or something, I dunno. And we this absolute creative peak where we got loads of stuff done. And then we got a bit confused and went off on a tangent and started writing loads of shit stuff, and got confused on what we wanted to be again, and wasted a couple months. And then came back, wrote ‘Counterpoint’, finished a lot of stuff, and then that was done.

And then we spent about 6 months, almost a year trying to record it, and that was really difficult. That was what nearly broke up our band, you know. We had such a set idea – this is why we don’t want to do this – a set idea of how we wanted the songs to sound, and we didn’t like the idea of letting anyone else outside the group in terms of producing, because we’re such control freaks. We knew how we wanted it to sound, and we kept experimenting with people, and trying to do it ourselves, and we couldn’t quite get it done. Then we went through these different producers – Tom Rowlands (Chemical Brothers), the Orbital guys helped out, Steve Dub who does the Chemical Brothers, and finally Ewan Pearson got it. But yeah, it was a really difficult process, because we had such a set idea and we couldn’t get it out. It was really touch and go on whether we were going to finish it at all, and luckily we did, and we’re very happy with it.

So when do you think we can get album #2?
Depends, because we’re leaving some of it up to chance. There’s a chance it might be done next year, there’s a chance it will be finished the year after. I mean, we’re making…what’s in our heads is unbelievably exciting. Like I can’t tell you how much. It just shits all over the first record. Yeah, it’s so exciting for us, like really exciting. It’s a different direction slightly. It will still sound like Delphic I think, but I think it’ll shock some people. A lot of people really. There’s a lot more focus on the songs themselves. Slightly more minimal, but in a much more epic way. I dunno, it’s hard to describe, but yeah, we’re really, really excited about it, we just want to get stuck into it, you know. Yeah, but I wouldn’t like to say when it’s done, we’d love to get it out next year, but it depends…
Yeah, that requires you to be in one place, without having to tour…so are you booked through September for festivals? You don’t have a UK tour this summer, do you?
No no, festivals end for us in August. September we’ve got off, October it looks like we’ll be in America. November and December we’ve got off but we’ll probably fit in a UK, you know, victory lap tour so to speak. We’ve done such good work in the UK, we’d kind of like round it off with some kind of shows at the end of the year, so we’ll probably do that. [turns slightly] Oh, there’s James there (coming off the bus). Beyond the recording stuff.
To be honest, we’ve been so lucky, we’ve been everywhere. In the past year, I’ve seen places I’ve never even dreamt of…we’re going to Hong Kong with Two Door Cinema Club (in August) actually. One of the places I really want to go actually, there were some gigs penciled in but they were cancelled and now there’s talk of setting up again, Russia. Which I think would be this unbelievably inspiring place. Such a vast, vast country. And yeah, we’d love to go there.

That’s totally doable, lots of bands go there.
We were putting these gigs together, and I was really worried we would end up doing some party at Putin’s house or something, or someone’s mansion and end up playing there. But yeah, no. I would really, really love to see Russia.

As of this past spring our editor Phil had already seen Delphic twice and I hadn’t seen them even once. They’ve only played three times in America (New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles; their Coachella appearance was cancelled, thanks to the Icelandic volcano) and several of my American friends were green with envy when they heard I’d be seeing Delphic gig in Denmark. Of the many names big and small scheduled to play at Roskilde, I was most excited to see them and watch ‘Acolyte’, their stunning debut album released in January, be realised fully live. (I was doubly lucky; I had a nice chat with their keyboardist Rick Boardman a couple hours prior to their set; it has been transcribed as a two-part interview that you can read on TGTF; part 1 is here, and part 2 is here.)

At Roskilde 2010, there were 5 main stages, and oddly (in my mind) Delphic was scheduled to play the smallest of them all, Pavilion. The tent fits about 2,000 people and at first I was worried about the turnout for an early evening time slot on Friday, especially for a UK band not that massive yet in Scandinavia. But as time went on, I needn’t have. The trio from the North proved their mettle, playing all but one track from ‘Acolyte’ with precision, and punters danced enthusiastically with them. ‘Clarion Call’ is a good intro but things really got started with ‘Doubt’, so catchy from the Rick Boardman’s mechanical vowels bounced out via drum pad and James Cook’s vocals of conviction. Before this, I only had the Jools Holland appearance in my mind, but now that I was witnessing it for myself? Perfection.

My personal favourite from the album, ‘Submission’, nearly brought me to tears because I didn’t think I’d ever get to see this song played live, and it sounded just incredible – Cook’s vocals, Boardman’s synths, and Matt Cocksedge’s guitar put together for an exciting sonic experience. Forget Spector’s wall of sound. Delphic IS the wall of sound. This is a band you have to see to believe. The trio decided to leave the ‘hits’ – ‘This Momentary’ and ‘Counterpoint’ – for later in the set, and this is when recognition finally sunk in for most of the crowd. It was as if lightbulbs went off over their heads, ‘so this is the band I’ve heard before!’ I’m amused but give a knowing smile as the audience goes mental, shouting back ‘let’s do something real!’ at the fired-up Cook. So much fun.

The three turned the heat way up at an already toasty Roskilde for nearly an hour, attracting curious onlookers and for sure converting them into believers. One scene I’ll never forget: multitudes of Danes desperately trying to get a set list, a towel, anything from the stage after they departed, as if they wanted something for their scrapbook or to hang on their bedroom wall as proof of ‘I was at Roskilde 2010 on Friday and saw Delphic – and they were awesome!’ I may have gone away set list-less like most of them but I got something far better: an amazing performance by a favourite band on foreign soil. It doesn’t get much better than that.

How did you get involved in doing the light show for Delphic?

I was on tour as LD for The Streets back in January 2009. Delphic were the support band and asked me to do lights each night for them for £30 cash in hand. I really got into it as it kept me on my toes as there were no breaks in beween songs which is pretty rare! After the tour they asked me to come to a handful more dates with them, i bought some fluorescent tubes from B&Q, and 18 months later here we are!

Do you have any other bands/live shows on your portfolio that incorporate the light show such as Delphic?

As I said, I was working with The Streets last year with a show designed by Bryan Leitch, since then my main priority has been Delphic however I have also managed to fit in some shows with The King Blues as well. Just recently I designed two shows in London and Paris for Two Door Cinema Club, and fingers crossed you will hopefully see me out with them in the Autumn.

Was it always the case to make sure that the lights were an integral part of the gig?

Right from the very beginning the band allways new the visual part of their show was going to be an integral part of a Delphic gig. Whether that be going into a tiny 200 capacity club and setting up 8 fluorescent tubes on the bands instruments, to creating the immersive lighting show that we attempted to create more recently. The band always want to stand out with their live show and give the audience something that they remember, both sonically and visually. We draw on and reference so many different influences and its something we talk about a lot, everything from the live shows of Daft Punk, Massive Attack, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead to visual artists such as Dan Flavin and UVA.

I think it goes without saying that everyone who has seen a Delphic gig has enjoyed the whole experience (the music, the sound quality, the live performance and the light show) It must have taken a lot of planning to get it all to click?

Surprisingly enough, we have never had a full rehearsal or pre-production day for a Delphic tour! The main ingredient that makes the Delphic live show what it is, is the eight individuals that are on the tour that make it happen. As well as the band there is our sound engineer, electronics tech, guitar tech and myself. We all approach the show in a very collaborative way and everyone has a creative role in the project. As soon as we get back on the bus after show its not long until we are talking about how the show went and what we could change and develop, in any areas. It is this open minded and collaborative attitude that helps us really work together as a team to create the show.

In terms of lighting, I need to know the set inside out, as I have been working for the band for 18 months I do know the songs extremely well, but if there is a new set or a new mix in between songs then Rick (keys) might send me a recording before the tour so I can get to know it and plan what I am going to do with it. If there is enough time, I might be able to program a few basic bits when the lighting is being prepared in the warehouse the day before the tour starts, but usually I programme the whole gig on the first day of the tour and constantly change and tweak it as the tour develops.

Are there any plans for a new light show for future Delphic tours or will it stay the same until this album has been fully toured?

The next phase for the light show is to create something for the major UK festivals that is simple to set up, due to the tight schedules of festivals we do not have the time to set up the full light show, however I do have something up my sleeve to make the stage visually interesting, and put the Delphic stamp on it, so look out for that. As for the rest of the year, we shall have to wait and see. We are constantly talking about how we can move forward, both in the long and short term.....

For any of our young readers interested in following in your footsteps of light design, what would you say is the best way to get into it?

Unfortunately there is no one way into the industry, I personally went to The Central School of Speech and Drama and studied for a degree in Theatre Lighting Design and then in my 3rd year was lucky enough to make the jump into live music with my placement with The Streets, some people I know started working as crew in house at their local venue, others maybe working for their mate's band.... My only advice is that if you REALLY want it, do everything you possibly can to make it into a reality, a sound engineer I know once told me, "If you choose a job that you love, you never have to do a days work in your life."

WIDELY held as one of the coolest new bands around, Delphic claim to be reinvigorating the spirit of late 80s rave by putting dance music back on the map.

The trouble is you never quite know where you are with the four-piece Manchester outfit whose mish-mash of indie-electro-rock-rave-pop appears to be pushing the boundaries of genre meddling to their very limits.

A play of their easy listening debut album, Acolyte, complete with understated harmonies and dance beats and they definitely err on the side of pop. But put them on stage in front of a boisterous audience and they become a completely different, rave-like animal.

Opening with Clarion Call with its soft siren intro and dreamy vocals, the synthesisers and drums soon kick in as it builds a head of steam, reaching a fast flowing climax with single hands pointing out the beat in a whipped-up crowd as the first wave of beer flies through the air.

An abrupt end, short pause for breath and straight into Doubt, which just about summed up my feelings about going to the gig in the first place as sticky liquid ran down the back of my neck and soaked into my T-shirt.

But with a rockier feel led by lead guitar and drums, the band’s heavily influenced New Order sound came bursting through as the track progressed and calm was restored, for the time being at least.

Red Lights saw more flirting with catchy but ultimately light-weight pop before Submission – arguably the standout mainstream track on the album and reminiscent of Duran Duran complete with sound-a-like Simon Le Bon vocals and Nick Rhodes keyboards.

This Momentary saw more soft harmonies morph into a thumping and unmistakable dance track, but the sparkling synths and infectious beats all got a bit samey in the end.

No-one could accuse Delphic of filling out their live set with unnecessary padding.

At 55 minutes – including encores – their performance at Leeds Metropolitan University was certainly to the point.

The danger was perhaps that the fast-rising MADVERTISEMENT anchester band left themselves open to grumbles about value for money.

Nine numbers culled from their debut Acolyte seemed a relatively meagre offering for an expectant audience.

Yet, in other respects, this four-piece are a band full of promise.

They write songs that are poppy enough to get played on the radio yet rave-y enough to appeal to a dance crowd.

Their lyrics are catchy yet sufficiently open-ended to invite multiple interpretations ('Let's do something real', 'Give me something I can believe in', ''Just tell me nothing's wrong today').

They like busy strobe lights.

Most importantly, when they lock into a groove they combine appealing elements of New Order, Orbital and Underworld.

If at times James Cook's bass was a little overpowering (most notably in the opening number Clarion Call where you could feel it buzzing in your chest), elsewhere there was a pleasing counterpoint between Matt Cocksedge's chiming guitar and Richard Boardman's squiggly synths.

During the extended jams of Doubt and Acolyte they made a stunning combination.

In another setting Delphic would be great. Indeed they should go down a treat at Glastonbury this summer.

REVIEW: Delphic, Sheffield Leadmill

DOCTOR Who and his Tardis are back on TV soon, but a trip down the Leady this weekend gave gig goers the chance to experience a time machine of a different sort.
New Manchester bright hopes Delphic, already on their second visit to the city this year, transport us back, evoking the spirit of '88 with their acid rave feel and Technique-era New Order influences.
It sounds the perfect soundtrack for a liberal dose of that meerkat stuff, or whatever it is that the kids are into these days.
But the night takes us forward too - surely we are seeing the evolution of a band due to set alight many a bigger stage and festival tent over the months to come.
The live set already seems to have left the debut album Acolyte far behind, although Doubt and Halcyon are still tight and run no longer than the four minute mark.
The more spacey tracks though are now being allowed to take flight and grow, with an epic This Momentary leading the way and a euphoric Counterpoint soaring even higher to provide the night's highlight.
It probably wouldn't work at all if Delphic didn't have such big tunes to fall back on, anchoring the show and never letting things drift into self-indulgence.
Indeed a tight hour-long set while feeling just right, also left you wanting something more - always the sign of a good set.

Sport.co.uk caught up with indie rave sensations Delphic to discuss their beloved Manchester United and their eventful music career thus far...

Another two goals for Wayne Rooney against Fulham. Is he now the complete striker?

JAMES: He's starting to remind me a bit of Alan Shearer in that it always seems like he's inevitably going to score in a game. All his goals this season seem to have come from inside the box so we're seeing a completely different Wayne Rooney and, bearing in mind that we know he can score from anywhere because we've seen it before, then I guess you'd have to say yes.

If you were going to look at the top three in the Premiership there's not much to choose between Drogba, Torres and Rooney ability wise. All three are unplayable on their day, but Rooney this season has shown a different level of maturity and mental attitude that the other two don't quite have. He used to lose his temper as much as the other two are prone to sulking if things don't go their way. Torres in a decent team would be frightening. But Rooney's attitude and willingness to learn make him the top man I think.

Look at the way he's become so good in the air now so, yep, complete striker and England's only hope of getting anywhere in South Africa.

What do you make of Sir Alex Ferguson's admission of misusing him prior to this season?

RICK: Well it was obvious at the time and Sir Alex and Rooney talked about it last season. He's a total team player, he was prepared to sacrifice himself for the team and that's why he's priceless. You see when he scores the first thing he does is acknowledge the provider - the opposite of Ronaldo.

Fergie's been developing this 4-5-1 turning into 4-3-3 for the past few seasons and last season played Ronaldo at the spearhead of it and Rooney got shifted to the wing. Because Ronaldo did so little working back, a lot of Rooney's play became defensive.

It seems crazy now given that we bought Ronaldo as a wide man and seeing how good Rooney's been up top that we didn't play Ronaldo wide and Rooney in this role, but Rooney's discipline and maturity is what makes him so good at it and i'm not sure we'd have seen Ronaldo work as hard on the wing. He would have drifted looking for the ball and instead of picking out Rooney like Valencia and Nani have done he would have taken it on himself. When you've got a player as individually effective as Ronaldo I guess you have to build around him, but if we could have coached Ronaldo to play a role then imagine how much more devastating United could have been. Maybe all this has made Rooney ready for this role, but you can't help but feel like despite 3 leagues and a CL medal, we've not seen the Wayne Rooney of the Euros in Portugal til now.

Is the rest of the squad in the right kind of shape to sustain any drop off in spending and carry on challenging? What areas do you think need strengthening?

RICK: Not really in the medium to long term. There's only Johnny Evans from the homegrown bunch that looks likely to make the grade, and he looks more like an O Shea than a Vidic or Ferdinand - a good squad player. We really need a goalkeeper, a right back, a central midfielder and a striker, probably a top class central defender to replace Vidic if he's on his way as the rumours go. Giggs, Neville, Scholes and Van der Sar are still key team/squad members who need replacing and that's expensive. Berbatov and Anderson don't look likely to stay the course, so there's a fair investment needed to stay competitive. Having said that, we can't compete financially with City or Chelsea - even if we didn't have the debt, they just spend silly money and we couldn't go that far with or without the Glazers. But as long as Sir Alex and Rooney are there we can hang in if we spend enough to keep the team up there. Only Ferguson and Wenger could do that.

Historically, the Glazers are always in it for the long haul. What do you think of David Gill’s assertion that they have a “sensible business strategy"?

MATT: It's b******s as far as we can see. How can spending something like £50m a year on interest be a sensible business strategy? I don't know what the Glazers want from the club. Seems to me like they bought it expecting to fleece far more out of it than they have - they underbudgeted for costs and even last year when United had one of the most succesful seasons in history they managed to lose money without the Ronaldo fee. How do you lose money with the biggest sports brand in the world if you have a 'sensible business strategy'? Gill's made a fool of himself for his £1.8 million a year saying one minute that "debt is the road to ruin" and then that it's sensible. It's not just bad for United it's bad for the whole of football.

Do you manage to get to the game much/at all? Is it easy to follow United when you’re out on the road?

MATT: Most people around us are United fans so we're usually able to find a pub or have it on the computer. Our tour manager is more on top of that than he is anything else! We don't get to as many games as we'd like anymore because we're always touring.

Who are your top five favourite United players of all time? And your five least favourite?

RICK: Difficult, but just to make it clear favourite doesn't mean best - just favourite - for me Cantona, lit up the place every time he got the ball. Capable of anything.

MATT: Irwin - never let you down.

JAMES: Mark Hughes - I know he went to City to manage but he was a legend when he played for us. Some of his goals were unreal. Oldham in the semi final at Wembley, last minute of extra time. Incredible.

RICK: Two more? Pallister and Robson. Legends

MATT: Least favourite is hard because we've had some awful players but they did try - like Ralph Milne was bad but he wasn't a bad fella?

RICK: Liam Miller was rubbish.

JAMES: Dong - embarrassing.

RICK: Bosnich was a tosser.

MATT: Good shout, what about Barthez as well?

JAMES: Yep, he was a twat. One more - Blanc, but only because he replaced Stam who shouldn't have gone.

Best game you've ever been to?

RICK: In '99 (I think?) we beat Liverpool in the FA Cup with 2 goals in the last minute. They'd been winning most of the game. It was the result more than the match - so satisfying.

What's it like hearing 'Red Light' blaring out at Old Trafford?

MATT: A bit surreal. Great, obviously, but you feel a bit removed from it really. You get something finished and then it's kind of out there. It's great of course but hopefully there'll be more to come.

Onto some more music-y questions. What's it like to be on the crest of such a wave? Is it still hard to compute everything that's going on? What's the most thrilling and/or rock and roll experience you've had so far?

JAMES: Like Matt said, it's a bit surreal. We are so busy getting on with everything that we haven't got any idea what's going on outside our bubble.

We just try to play better and better and write better tunes - that's all we're thinking about. We've no concept of whether it's going well or not other than that the gigs seem to be getting bigger. We've always been a bit like that - we're very locked into what we're doing. Rock and roll wise, I think we're still waiting for all of that...it's early days...

What's the most star-struck you've been? And the best festival/gig you've played so far? Any good 'star stories' or celebrity fans?

JAMES: We haven't been particularly star-struck yet but this year will be a lot busier festival wise so maybe if we bumped into Bjork or Radiohead then it might be a different story. No good star stories yet though i'm afraid.

How did the band come together? What led to you getting signed?

RICK: We really came together because we weren't into the music that was being made and felt like we had to do something ourselves. We'd known each other a while and just got on with it. It happened quite naturally. We went away to the Lake District to get our heads into it, wrote some tunes on our laptops and then advertised for a drummer - incredibly Dan (our drummer) showed up and was perfect. He even came up with the bands' name. Signing just kind of happened to us - we put some demos up on MySpace and next thing we knew there were people talking to us. We just let other people get on with the business side and told them what things we wanted control of and it just happened. Now we just want to keep moving forward. This is only the start for us.

What are your primary influences and what are you listening to at the moment?

MATT: Difficult question because we all like different music. We all tend to agree on Radiohead, Bjork, Sigur Ros, Aphex Twin, Orbital and Chemical Brothers, but then we really love big pop songs that people like Xenomania write. We're so locked into what we're doing that we don't get to listen to enough new music, but there's some good stuff coming out of Manchester at the moment like Everything Everything and Wu Lyf. People told us it would get busy once the band got a record out but we didn't realise quite how much, I suppose. Not that we're complaining. We're just getting used to it.

Their debut album is good – but reimagined over a 50-minute live techno-style set, those same songs sound ruddy magnificent.

The trio might look like an average indie band but their racks of synths in a sea of cable make it look like they robbed Stevie Wonder’s house.

Clarion Call is a fabulous reminder of the power of the 808 drum machine, while tunes like Doubt strip down the audio bumf to focus on bursts of glorious melody.

Delphic sound destined to become Glastonbury highlights for years to come.

Delphic , The Sugarmill, Hanley

AS NEON lights flash in time to a crescendo of electronic beats, it's not hard to see why The Sugarmill is at almost full capacity tonight.
Delphic, a Mancunian trio of genre spanners are headlining as part of their current UK sold out tour.
The band, which has previously supported the likes of La Roux and Friendly Fires played top festivals such as Leeds and Creamfields last year, and one year on, they're headlining venues on their own.
2009 was a successful year, with the release of their debut album Acolyte, along with their appearance on Jools Holland and having been short-listed for the BBC Sound of 2010 award, they quickly earned the hearts of music press and fans worldwide.
Sunday night was a snapshot into the dizzying heights of the bands new found success. Delphic have officially found their feet and effortlessly display just how an alternative band works both as a concept and as a whole new genre. Of course it would be easy to compare the band to fellow Mancunian musicians New Order, but it's their gentle mixture of dance, anthemic lyrics and guitar riffs, which entwine to create a totally unique sound.
The highlight of the set was the track 'This Momentary' which features 'Lets do Something Real' something their devoted fans took literally as dancing ceased for a moment in order to assist a sea of crowd surfers. Other tracks such as 'Red Lights' and 'Counterpoint' made appearances to the sea of arms, waving appreciatively from the very beginning to the end of their set.
A wise man once said 'God is a DJ' and on Sunday 400 people worshiped at his church at the feet of Delphic.
